Focus On... Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

September 2020

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness month. This serves as a time to raise awareness and share information on prostate cancer prevention and screening.

Here are steps you or your loved ones can take to help lower your risk of prostate cancer.

  1. Maintain a healthy diet
Eat more fruits, vegetables, and reduced-fat foods, and reduce dairy intake.
  2. Exercise
Men who are obese have a higher risk of prostate cancer. Regular exercise will help support an overall healthy lifestyle.
  3. Talk to your doctor about regular screenings
Early detection is key. According to the American Cancer Society, men should start receiving prostate exams starting at age 50 (unless there’s a family history of cancer, in which case screening may be recommended earlier).
  4. Stop smoking and do not consume a lot of alcohol
It’s important to remember that refraining from smoking and drinking can help contribute to a healthier lifestyle.
