Parkinson's disease is a slow progressing neurodegenerative brain disorder, primarily affecting the nervous system. According to the National Parkinson Foundation approximately 60,000 new cases are diagnosed per year in the U.S. with the average age of diagnosis being 62.
While no cure for Parkinson's currently exists, the primary goal of treatment is to manage symptoms. Treatment programs are often individualized to the patient, targeting the symptoms which are most bothersome. Some treatment options as described by the Mayo Clinic are medication, surgery, and physical therapy.
