This month the focus is on the thyroid, the gland in the endocrine system that regulates metabolism—how your body gets energy from the foods you eat. The thyroid gland is butterfly-shaped and sits just above the collarbone in your neck. According to MedlinePlus, millions of people in the U.S. have thyroid diseases, most of whom are women. People with thyroid disease use energy more slowly or quickly than they should. Both conditions have many causes. Treatment entails trying to reset the body’s metabolism to a normal rate. There are also other thyroid-related conditions, such as cancer of the thyroid, Graves’ Disease, and Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, that have particular symptoms and concerns.
